Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae (M. hyopneumoniae) is the etiological agent of enzootic pneumonia (EP) in pigs. EP is a chronic respiratory disease that affects pigs of any age. Secondary bacteria such as Pasteurella multocida, Bordetella bronchiseptica, andActinomyces spp. are often involved (1,5). The disease EP is very common in pig-dense areas (1). Prevalence of antibodies against M. hyopneumoniae in closed breeding herds as well as in finishing farms in the Netherlands is estimated at 52% and 36,5%, respectively (4). In farms with an over crowded pen density and poor ventilation, EP is a very common disease that often spreads from pig to pig especially in weaned piglets and finishing pigs. The first clinical signs are often seen after weaning. In neighbouring countries, vaccination against M. hyopneumoniae has been proven to be beneficial (5). In this study, we investigated whether M. hyopneumoniae vaccinated pigs performed better than non-vaccinated pigs when both were housed in the same airspace on a farrow to finish farm with clinical signs of chronic respiratory disease including EP in the Netherlands.
