The New PV System Technology (NST) comprises the development of the several components such as the magnetic power transmitter and the magnetic power receiver, interface of PV module with fully integrated magnetic transmitter, the magnetic power bus and the central power processor. This innovative PV system technology concept removes the major weaknesses of state-of-the-art PV system technology such as varying lifetime expectancy of the PV system components, low degree of integration of electronic devices, sensitivity against shading, high cabling costs, significant mismatch losses and degradation of the PV generator. The magnetic coupling devices (transmitter and receiver) are very small devices which is possible due to the high transmission frequency of 40 kHz from the PV module to the power bus. This allows also an optimized integration of the high-frequency electronics and NST components and will lead to a significant increase life-time of the system because of the use magnetic material. The development of the prototypes will lead to a significant reduced PV system installation costs and reduced safety needs due to the use of a magnetically induced power bus with fully encapsulated magnetic power receivers. The economic benefits at the system level (reduced cabling and installation cost, reduced cost due to minimised safety needs which also accounts for the PV module allow for a total reduction of system cost of 15-20% (over the PV system lifetime) which will create an essential push for the take-up this technology of a large scale and open up new markets for PV. The project has been co-financed by the European Commission in the framework of the Non Nuclear Programme JOLLEIII.
