Stage of gestation when uterine torsion occurs should be considered when advising clients regarding the prognosis for survival of mares and foals. Survival of mares with uterine torsion at 10 mo of gestation was excellent but decreased when uterine torsion occurred at 320 days (term gestation). Prognosis for foal survival was best when uterine torsion occurred at 320 days of gestation and was associated with a method of correction. After uterine torsion, there is a good prognosis for return to breeding soundness for mares.
