Incorporation of the element-free Galerkin method into a general purpose finite element computer program

XFEAP is a general-purpose finite element computer code that offers a wide variety of element types and material models for solving problems in solid mechanics. Despite its many features, it is restricted by the inherent limitations of the finite element method (FEM). Most notably, it is often difficult and inconvenient to generate meshes for complex 3D components or to repeatedly re-mesh problem domains that possess internal discontinuities such as moving cracks or that are undergoing large displacements and deformations. To address such problems, the capability for analysis by the element-free Galerkin method (FFGM), one of several recently developed meshless methods, is added to XFFAP resulting in an analysis tool that enables the selection of whichever method (FEM, EFGM or coupled FFM-EFGM) is most suitable for the required analysis. Numerical examples in 2-D and 3-D elastostatics and elastoplasticity are presented to demonstrate the efficiency and accuracy of the modified XFEAP program. The steps required to add EFOM analysis capability to XFEAP may be generalized to other general purpose FEM software packages.
