Fluid-structure interaction analysis in biomechanics

Two central problems in biomechanics are modeled and simulated using coupled fluid-structure interaction finite element analysis: blood flow through a compliant atherosclerotic artery and the flow and deformation of a single blood cell passing through a narrow capillary segment. In each case state-of-the-art numerical methods have enabled a more realistic modeling of the coupled mechanics, though fundamental modeling issues remain to be resolved. We share our experiences in modeling and simulating both problems and take a look into the future of coupled models in biomechanics.
