Depressant Action of Ca and Mg on Flotation of Cu-activated Sphalerite

The effect of Ca (500 ppm) and Mg (50 ppm) ions on uptake of copper and xanthate on sphalerite and flotation of Cu-activated sphalerite was investigated as a function of pH. Copper and xanthate uptake showed no change due to the presence of Ca and Mg. Flotation recovery was significantly reduced when pH exceeded that for formation of the corresponding hydroxide precipitate. The recovery decrease was much stronger for Mg, reflecting the lower pH for onset of hydroxide precipitation (ca. pH 9) than for Ca (ca. pH 12). Scanning Electron Microscopy and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy determined that the Mg(OH)_(2(s)) precipitates were present as patches on the surface. The depressant mechanism appears to be formation of hydrophilic hydroxide sites on the sphalerite surface, which compete with the hydrophobic (Cu/xanthate) sites.
