THE EFFECTS ON ENVIRONMENTAL NOISE OF DIFFERENT URBAN TRAFFIC SCENARIOS

Traffic simulations have been carried out in the Portuguese town of Evora for two different traffic policies, the current situation and a hypothesized future system based on the adoption of traffic control measures in the town center. These simulations have allowed us to investigate the effectiveness of such a policy in terms of noise impact. In this study a methodology for the evaluation of noise impact has been defined and some suitable models selected from the literature. The calculation of noise pollution in the town of Evora has demonstrated that the closure of the town center to non resident traffic would lead to a great reduction in peak hour traffic flows, and consequently a decrease in the noise level of about 4.5 dBA at all sites measured, with the exception of the links leading to Lg. Portas de Moura where the decrease ranged from 3 to 4.3 dBA. It should be noted that the maximum decrease of the noise recorded in the town of Evora was equal to 7%. Most of the roads have a canyon shape and hence the reduction of traffic produces a very significant improvement in the acoustical conditions.
