INVESTIGATION OF DISC BRAKE NOISE USING A HERETICAL TECHNIQUE

This work relies on small changes being made to a brake system to change some aspect of the noise being produced. These small changes are recorded and comparisons are made to understand how they affect the system. The difference between this method and the usual approach to solving brake noise is that changes are made to increase the noise, not reduce it. The reasoning behind this decision is in part due to the requirement for vibration to be present for holographic interferometry, as large amplitudes of vibration are more easily recorded using this technique. The early results of this work have shown that certain changes will alter the frequencies produced by the brake. These results have been tracked and some components identified as being more responsible for those frequencies. This approach reduces testing time, and allows greater visualisation of the vibration patterns on the brake, aiding analysis. It is hoped that this approach will lead to a greater understanding of the contributory factors in brake noise to allow greater modelling accuracy, and hopefully to allow the selection of known changes to reduce the overall noise.
