Basing on the "free water molecules" to be defined by the water molecules that can dissolve more guest molecules (solute); It is well explained that the deformation of hydrate membrane observed in sub-saturated conditions when stressed is not the usual elastic or plastic deformation but should be the rebuild of hydrate. This model can also explain why the hydrate membrane in saturated water with CO_2; where no free water molecules exist; behaves so brittle that it does not deform until the stress reaches its strength and the membrane breaks abruptly.
