Large diesel engines are the primary drivers in many industrial applications such as container vessels, ferries, power generators as well as many large on and off road vehicles. Early fault detection and diagnosis is important to ensure the engine's reliable operation throughout the course of their service. This paper presents an investigation of the detection capability of using the engine flywheels speed variation for monitoring the instantaneous angular speed (IAS) of large diesel engines. Many publications have shown that the IAS signal is effective for monitoring small engines with less than eight cylinders. The applicability to larger engines, however, is strongly contested due to the high number of cylinders and large moment of inertia. This research investigates the fault detection and diagnosis capabilities of the IAS signal obtained from the magnetic pickup unit (MPU). Various tests on several medium speed diesel engines with up to 20 cylinders were carried out to demonstrate the practicality and to prove the results of this method. The results of this investigation show that the IAS measurement technique can be applied to diagnose and maintain large volume diesel engines during operation.
