The tandem operation of draglines is understood to enhance the production and productivity related aspects in a surface mine. Keeping the importance of popularly used tandem operation of draglines, the present study has been undertaken in a large Indian opencast coal mine in order to critically investigate the horizontal tandem operation of draglines on a moderately hard and high (about35m) sandstone bench overlying 18m thick coal seam. The study has revealed that although preparation of balancing diagram for planning of dragline operations is the foremost important process, the actual implementation of the productivity parameters as stipulated by the balancing diagram need to be regularly monitored in the field. The concept of weighted cycle time and overall cycle time computation vis-a-vis swing angle variation appear to be useful in affecting the earthmoving efficiency and the related performance parameters of draglines in the said mode of operation. On the basis of extensive fieldwork, the results have been discussed in terms of cycle time computations, annual linear advancement, annual coal exposure, annual output computation, and, compared with the balancing diagram projections. The discrepancies found between the two have been critically analyzed for improved performance of draglines in close co-ordination with the balancing diagram, which is the basic planning tool for the tandem operations.
