Measurement of coatings on printed substrates poses challenges for on-line gauging systems, due to the fact that the composition of the coating material is vastly different from the composition of the printings and substrate materials. This paper discusses the various sensor technologies such as Nuclear, X-Ray, InfraRed etc., used in coat weight measurements on substrates, errors in coat weight measurement caused by printed substrates and techniques employed to overcome them. The optimal solution for dynamic accurate on-line coating weight measurement on printed substrates at high production speeds provided by Full Spectrum InfraRed Sensor technology is discussed in detail.
