Performance of solar reflective materials produced by a laboratory scale roll-coater

Concentrating solar power (CSP) technologies use large mirrors to collect sunlight for conversion from thermal energy to electricity. The development of advanced reflector materials that are low cost and maintain high specular reflectance for extended lifetimes under severe outdoor environments is important to the viability of CSP systems. A promising low-cost construction consists of a chrome-plated steel foil substrate with a silver reflective layer protected by an alumina coating 2-4 microns thick. The alumina coating is deposited under vacuum by ion beam assisted deposition (IBAD). To demonstrate that high performance solar reflective material can be produced in a roll format using vacuum deposition techniques, a roll coater has been built to process 30.48-cm-wide rolls of solar reflective material. Recent efforts have concentrated on increasing the deposition rate while maintaining durable film properties. The history, production, status, and performance of this material are discussed.
