The purpose of this presentation is to discuss the concept of custom polymer design as it applies to their use within the transfer printing and vacuum metallization industries. Understanding the needs of the customer, the consumer and understanding your companies' capabilities is critical when designing a more efficient coating system. Printing of film or foil by lamination or in-mold processes requires engineering the proper coating system right the first time with minimal waste in order to remain as a profitable industry leader. Technical personnel must design a set of laboratory experiments, validate pre-screened formulations on a pilot scale and thereafter validate coating systems during plant trials before a product line is ready for full-scale commercialization. Each surface coating layer must be carefully designed to efficiently meet or exceed the difficult demands of the specific end-use requirements before introducing new commercial products. This presentation is developed to assist technical personnel and those individuals involved in the sales and marketing of pigmented and metallized graphic products, holographics, hot stamp foils, security products and a variety of related coating systems for the transfer printing industry. After drawing an outline of the performance requirements that need to be satisfied, the design and application of custom polymers will be discussed, particularly value-added acrylic chemistries.
