An extensive Quantitative Trait Allele (QTA) mapping study, based on 300 selfed progeny of the cultivar R570, was undertaken using more than 1000 AFLP markers. The genetic map gave access to about half of the genome studied. The population was evaluated in two replicated trials for yield components related to several morphological and technological traits recorded in two successive crop-cycles. Numerous QTAs were found at P = 5 x 10~(-3), of which only one fourth might possibly be artefactual due tomere chance, depending on P. Their individual size effect ranged between 3% and 7% of the whole variation. QTA stability across years was improved when limiting threshold stringency. Epistatic interactions were also explored by looking for di-genic interactions at P = (5 x 10~(-3))~2. Altogether the putative genetic factors revealed here explained from 30% to 55% of the total phenotypic variation depending on the trait. This is the first extensive QTA mapping study performed in cultivated sugarcane.
