Provision of 1-aminocyclopropane 1-carboxylic acid (ACC) in aqueous solution to the basal ends of horseradish root segments (Armoracia rusticana P. G. Gaertn., B. Mey. & Scherb., Brassicaceae) that, by isotope-dilution gas chromatography mass spectroscopic analysis had undetectable levels of endogenous ACC, induced the stoned fusiform cells of vascular cambium to become small-diameter tracheary elements (TEs), evidently without preceding cell division or cell enlargement. Neither control (provided water only) nor 2-chloroethylphosphonic acid (CEPA) - treated segments produced TEs. The synthetic auxin 1-naphthalene acetic acid (NAA) appeared to promote cambial cell division and radial expansion of cambial derivatives, but NAA had negligible inductiveeffect on xylogenesis. An ACC + NAA combination stimulated more cambial derivatives to differentiate into larger diameter TEs (i.e., vessel members) than occurred in response to ACC alone. These observations corroborate findings with conifers and hardwoods and indicate that ACC, rather than auxin, activates cells to differentiate into woody elements.
