During the course of examining certain naphthalenediones for plant growth regulator activity, we determined that the ubiquitous naturally occurring agent menadione inhibited wheat coleoptile growth at 10~(-3) M by 100 percent. This is in direct contrast to a United States patent. (#4,764,201) issued in August 1988 which claimed that menadione was a plant growth promoting substance. Armed with the information on its inhibitory properties, we then looked at certain microorganisms such as Escherichiacoli, Vibrio fisheri, Neochloris and Isochrysis galbana. This natural product proved to be an effective inhibitor of growth in the aforementioned organisms. Subsequently, as a result of these experiments, it became obvious that menadione has a broad spectrum of activity. This led to the testing against Dinoflagellates, Dinoflagellate cysts, zebra mussels, and other test organisms. Hence, a natural product exhibiting growth inhibitory properties in the etiolated wheat coleoptile bioassay is being commercially developed under the trademark, SEAKLEEN, to treat aquatic nuisance species.
