Plant growth regulators (PGRs) are commonly used for managing seedhead and/or vegetative growth in managed turfgrasses. In low maintained turf such as highway rights-of-way, herbicides are used at sublethal rates to reduce seedhead production whichreduces the mowing requirement. In highly maintained turfgrasses (golf courses, athletic fields, etc.), PGRs are used to reduce vegetative growth, improve turf quality, and/or to reduce infestations of annual bluegrass (Poa annud). For the most part, PGRs used in highly maintained turf reduce vegetative growth by temporarily inhibiting GA biosynthesis in plants. Paclobutrazol and trinexapac-ethyl are commonly used on golf course putting greens. Paclobutrazol is rootabsorbed and is used primarily to reduce infestations of annual bluegrass. Trinexapac-ethyl is used primarily to manage vegetative growth of creeping bentgrass. There is also some evidence that this product may increase root growth. As a result, the manufacturer promotes this product, in part, by claiming trinexapac-ethyl improves stress tolerance of creeping bentgrass. Because creeping bentgrass can suffer tremendous root loss in summer, the effects of these GA inhibitors on root growth is extremely important to turfgrass managers. In addition, the effects of these PGRs on lateral growth is important, because creeping bentgrass recovers from injury by regrowth from stolons.
