Regeneration of avocado from cell culture has potential application for crop improvement through somatic hybridization, mutation breeding and genetic transformation for generation of disease resistance rootstocks. Working protocols for avocado plantregeneration through somatic embryogenesis, protoplast and shoot culture are available. Induction of embryogenic cultures from zygotic embryos occurs at low frequency (4-25 percent). Somatic embryo development is highly genotype dependent and often diminishes quickly with age. Plant conversion from somatic embryos has been low and is a bottleneck for realization of avocado plant regeneration potential for crop improvement.
