The development and wide use of the World Wide Web (Web) for all types of information has led to the first hand use of health/medical information by patients who want to take more of informed lead in their own healthcare. The demand for this information has been fueled by the Internet, TV health reports and extended coverage of health issues by all media outlets. The Internet is rapidly bridging the gap between information that is designed to be used by health professionals and information that is designed to be used by consumers. Many consumers are eager to have access to all information relating to their health situation, and many of them are quite capable of understanding it. Because so much information is available, the Internet has become an uncontrolled environment where it is vital for users to be able to critically evaluate the information they receive from the Internet in terms of accuracy, quality, and authority. Increasingly, patients are asking healthcare providers and information specialists how to judge the usefulness of healthcare websites. This overview of practical tips on assessing websites will hopefully become part of your practitioner's toolkit.
