Biosurfactants have potential for use in enhancement of in suit bioremediation and biorestoration by increasing the bioavailability of contaminants. Microorganisms isolated from oil-contaminated soil were examined for their abilities to degrade and emulsify hydrocarbons, then found the relationship between the degree of emulsification ( determined by E_(24) value ) and hydrocarbons degradation. In the batch experiment of the bacteria growth, the emulsion phenomenon began from the logarithmic phase and reached on stable at the stationary phase. Moreover, there was relationship between the ability of utilizing the oil by the bacteria and the emulsion phenomenon: the higher the E_(24) value was, the larger quantity oil was degraded. In the slurry experiment with pure bacteria, no matter either single bacteria incubation or mixed bacteria incubation was used, addition of bacteria was helpful to the oil degradation in the natural oil and the sterilized soil. Owing to the competition between the added bacteria and the native microorganisms in the original soil, the degrading effects were not apparent in the natural soil. Besides, the oil degrading effect caused by the single bacteria incubation or the mixed bacteria incubation was not absolute, it should depend on the nutrient conditions of the soil and the allocation of microorganisms in the soil.
