Regional Modeling of Air Toxic Contaminants

The South Coast Air Quality Management District (District) conducted a Multiple Air Toxics Exposure Study (MATES-II) in the South Coast Air Basin. The study included monitoring of various air toxic pollutants throughout the metropolitan Los Angeles area for a one-year period, development of spatially and temporally resolved air toxic emission inventories, modeling air toxic concentrations and risk assessment. In this presentation, we describe the air toxic modeling aspect of the study. Toxic air contaminants were modeled using a photochemical dispersion model in both the inert mode and a modified version of the reactive mode. The modeling region comprised a 210x120 km area with 2 km grid resolution which included the metropolitan Los Angeles area. Two-dimensional temperature and mixing height fields and three-dimensional wind fields were developed for a one-year period from April 1998 to March 1999. Gridded hourly emissions of air toxic compounds for the one-year period were generated from organic gas and particulate matter emissions inventories by applying source-specific speciation profiles. Model performance was evaluated against available 24-hour and long-term average ambient measurements from the same one-year period. The modeled concentration fields were used to assess potential cancer risk from exposure to air toxic contaminants. This region-wide assessment of risk provides background concentrations and risk levels for assessing impact of point source emissions. Furthermore, it provides a way to estimate the health benefit from reduction of ambient concentrations of air toxics due to implementation of ozone and PM control strategies.
