IN-SEASON N FERTILIZATION USING AN IN-SEASON ESTIMATE OF POTENTIAL YIELD

Fertilization rates in cereal production systems are generally determined by subtracting soil test N from a specified yield goal-based N requirement. This study was conducted to determine if an algorithm using in-season-estimated-yield (INSEY) in winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) could be used to refine N fertilization rates and ultimately increase yield. INSEY was computed using the sum of two post-dormancy NDVI measurements (January and March), divided by the cumulative growing degree-days from the first to second reading. At both sites, variable rate application (each 1m2 treated independently) based on INSEY increased wheat yield when compared to fixed rates, while using much lower fertilizer N. Also, efficiency of use (grain produced per kg of N applied) was highest at both sites when N fertilizer was applied based on the INSEY algorithm When yield potentials are accurately determined, increased yields are more likely to be realized, as a result of treating small-scale spatial variability.
