The imperceptible, everlasting natural background radiation levels are composed of Cosmogenic and Primordial radionuclides. Natural environmental radiation depends on geological and geographical conditions. West coast of India, China and certain beaches in Brazil are the areas well known for their high background radiation [1]. Higher background radiation levels are associated with igneous rocks such as granite and sedimentary rocks. The specific levels due to terrestrial background radiation are related to the types of rock from which the soil originates. Literature survey indicates that the monazite deposits in the coastal area are formed due to the weathering of rocks in the Western Ghats [2]. The present study has been undertaken to investigate the activity of primordial radionuclides in the Pollachi taluk, a taluk lying at the foothills of Western Ghats.
