Avian remains from the Middle Eocene of the Geiseltal (Sachsen-Anhalt, Germany) are described. In the course of this study the holotypic tarsometatarsus of Palaeotis weigelti (Struthioniformes, Palaeotididae), previously thought to have been lost, was rediscovered; an additional specime of this species is reported. A very large and possibly flightless species of the Idiornithidae ("Gruiformes") is described as ?Idiornis anthracinus, sp. nov. Its tarsometatarsus is much more robust than that of most idiornithid species form the Upper Eocene to Upper Oligocene deposits of the Quercy (France). The putative hornbill Geiseloceros robustus is referred to the Idiornithidae incertae sedis. An incomplete articulated skeleton of Eoglaucidium pallas (Coliiformes, Sandcoleidae) is presented, which is the most substantial record of this species from the Geiseltal. An isolated humerus and a poorly preserved skeleton are referred to the coliiform species Selmes absurdipes; the specimens are the first record of this species from the Geiseltal. For the first time the Pseudasturidae are reported from the Geiseltal; two species can be distinguished, one of which seems to be closely related to Pseudastur macrocepalus. A new species of the genus Plesiocathartes, P. geiselensis, is described. The holotype comprises skeletal elements so far unknown for the genus, which show that Plesiocathartes distinctly differs from the Cathartidae. The possibility of a closer relationship to the Leptosomidae is considered. Most avian specimens from the Geiseltal that have been found in the local stratigraphic level "Unterkohle' (MP 11) represent taxa that also occur in the contemporaneous deposits of Messel (Hessen, Germany). In contrast thereto, several of the taxa from younger stratigraphic levels have not been recorded from Messel so far (e.g. the Aegialornithidae). The absence of Palaeotis weigelti in the "Unterkohle" of the Geiseltal might be explained by ecological reasons.
