A numerical study concerning the tensile plastic deformation behaviour of welds with undermatched mechanical properties in the Heat Affected Zone is described in this paper. The tensile behaviour of the welds in the presence and absence of defects is analysed by numerical simulation. Based on numerical results, the variation of the global strength, ductility and toughness of the welds are discussed as a function of the mis-match in the mechanical properties, for different widths of the Heat Affected Zone and crack positions relative to the Weld Metal I Heat Affected Zone interface.
