Steelmaking slag blocks were made by a carbonation reaction using CO_2 in an exhaust gas from the steelmaking process. Calcium carbonate, such as calcite, was formed between the slag particles resulting in the hardening of the blocks. The blocks could react with about 6 mass% of CO_2 (800°Cignition loss base), and showed no cracks or expansion over 3 years exposure to air or in the sea.
