Time is probably the least acknowledged facet of achieving a quality coating project. Since it is often said "time is money", where do we invest our time in achieving the best possible coating outcome? This paper discusses why time well spent improves quality of the coating application, reduces defects and increases durability. The painting component of any project, whether new construction or an ongoing maintenance project, is often at the bottom of the food chain. It's compressed to meet time schedules when projects run late, or deleted from a maintenance program when money is tight. Asset owners and construction companies need to understand that their choices and inadequate provision of "painting time" at all stages of a coating program will impact on their bottom line at some stage. It all starts with understanding the project, taking time to ask the right questions. This includes considering the size and scope of the project and understanding the environments and micro environments that the coatings will be exposed to. One of the major time considerations that everyone asks is the durability of the coating system. How long will it last? The asset owner has expectations which may or may not be achievable; this has to be conveyed to the specifier, coating manufacturer and applicator so these expectations can be met. Once the expectations are taken into account its time to hit the books and find a coating system that will achieve the expectations. Often you won't find one, so its time to compromise. This means looking at the life cycle costs of a coating system, time to first maintenance, ease and cost of repair and the intervals between those repairs: The development of suitable specifications, correct application and repairs to damaged coatings all need time.
