摘要

Surgical castration of male pigs is a growing welfare concern with emerging popular support for the use of alternative methods and post-operative care. Some countries, such as Norway, have already passed legislation prohibiting surgical castration without anesthesia. While significant research has been done on the painful effects of castration, the literature is lacking in regards to rates of complications and other associated conditions in the current US swine industry. The purpose of this study was to determine the rates of scrotal hernias, cryptorchidism, incision healing complications and low viability animals during the early post-castration period.
