Giardia duodenalis (syn. Giardia lamblia) and Cryptosporidium spp. are common intestinal parasites of both humans and animals. Several outbreaks of human giardiasis and Cryptosporidiosis have been linked to contaminated water sources. Giardiasis is the most common cause of non-bacterial diarrhea in North America, and was reported as the third leading human enteric disease in Ontario in 1998. The infection patterns and sources of infection of these parasites in cattle, sheep and horses have been examined in a number of epidemiological studies. However, research into these aspects of giardiasis and cryptosporidiosis in other farm animals, such as swine, are lacking. Presumably, swine can become infected after ingestion of Cryptosporidium oocysts and Giardia cysts in contaminated water, food or from the environment. In order to better understand the epidemiological implications of Cryptosporidium and Giardia, on human health, information regarding the prevalence in livestock is needed. This study wasdesigned to determine the prevalence of Cryptosporidium and Giardia infections in Ontario swine using a sensitive and specific detection method.
