The management of acute diverticulitis (AD) is reliant on accurate diagnosis and assessment of sepsis, Acute surgery is reserved for severe sepsis while the majority of patients can be managed conservatively, Surgery in the acute setting in most instances would be a Hartmann's procedure. The place of laparoscopic surgery in the acute setting remains in doubt. Elective surgery after successful management of an acute episode is determined by the severity of the initial disease in the majority of patients.
