Alternative Contact Materials for AC- and DC Power Relays on the Background of Upcoming Legal Restrictions in Regard to Harmful Substances

The European Union is going to restrict the use of environmentally harmful substances as mercury, lead, chromium (VI) and cadmium in automotive applications as well as in electrical and electronic devices. These restrictions will prohibit the use of silver / cadmium oxide contact material, which up to now finds wide application especially in AC relays. The paper compares different contact materials from the material groups of silver/cadmium oxide, silver/tin oxide and silver/zinc oxide in DC as well as AC applications. It is shown that additives as bismuth oxide and copper oxide (for silver/tin oxide) and silver tungstate (for silver/zinc oxide) are essential to improve switching performance. Combining these additives with proper contact material manufacturing technology lead to materials capable to equal or even outperform silver/cadmium oxide.
