The new Pressure Equipment Directive (97/23/EC), designed to remove technical barriers to trade, became law within the European Community from 30th May 2002. All new pressure equipment placed on the market and put into service after that date having a positive pressure above 0.5 barg must meet the requirements of the Directive. Within the essential safety requirements of the Directive are materials issues that have caused difficulties to address when ensuring compliance with the spirit and intent of the requirements. These requirements cover the suitability of materials for their use and application during the scheduled lifetime unless replacement is foreseen and indicated to the product user. This paper reviews this situation with materials.
