A Discussion on the Intrinsic Antiwear and Extreme-Pressure Performance of Overbased Calcium Solfonate Complex Grease and Overbased Calcium Oleate Complex Grease (PPT)
1.Common feature of all overbased Ca greases is sub-micron or nanometer sized micelles containing crystalline Ca carbonate. 2.Micelles containing Ca carbonate surrounded with either sulfonate, or oleate, or salicylate can be considered as a hybrid thickener systems in between a soap fiber thickener system and a solid particle thickener system. 3.The organic anion on micelle containing Ca carbonate will determine the crystal structure of the crystalline Ca carbonate core formed inside these micelles. 4.Sub-micron or nanometer sized crystalline Ca carbonate core inside the micelles are the origin of excellent antiwear and EP properties for these types of grease. 5.Both crystalline Ca carbonate core inside micelles either as Calcite or Vaterite act as passive EP additive building an effective barrier between two metal surfaces under extreme high load conditions to prevent surface welding. 6.Due to its high performance, overbased Ca complex greases will be more popular in the near future.
