Water pollution is an ever - growing problem that seriously influences our social economic development and threatens human health. Gaussian mathematical model is one of widely used approaches for pollutant transport studies and water quality monitoring and management. The Gaussian model can efficiently provide the variations of ambient parameters in water, rather easily be coded to form practical professional software, and then be adopted by various engineers and environmentalists. This paper reports a microcomputer software operated on Windows platforms, namely AguaRio - 2.0, which was developed on the basis of the first order reaction of BOD (Biological Oxygen Demand) and a modified Streeter and Phelps equation, in order to simulate and determine the profile of DO (Dissolved Oxygen) and the degradation of BOD along with the interested reaches of rivers. This software considers many impacts of environmental factors, such as the different discharge forms (concentrated or punctual discharge source, tributary contribution, distributed discharge source), nitrogenous BOD, BOD sedimentation, photosynthetic production, benthic demand of oxygen and so on. The using of AguaRio -2.0 software is very accessible, being operated completely in the form of Graphical User Interface (GUI) . Firstly, the studied river is conveniently divided into several reaches. The computational program can then run after successfully finishing the inputting of all physical data and environmental parameters through four dialog boxes, related to the characteristics of the river and pollutant sources.
