摘要

The Yellow River is one of the main rivers in Northern China. It flows through eight provinces: Qinghai, Gansu, Ningxia, Inner Mongolia, Shanxi, Shaanxi, Henan and Shandong with a total length of 5 ,464 kilometers. The Yellow River Basin covers 725,000 square kilometers, and more than 98 million people live in the Basin. A sustainable water environment of the Yellow River Basin is critical to the development of local economy and the health of local residents. However, during the past few decades, rapid growth in both local economy and population has lead to considerable increases in water consumption and effluent discharge. Water pollution in the Yellow River has become a more and more severe problem. This paper summarizes the pollution status of the Yellow River Basin, and discusses possible strategies to control various sources of water pollution, including industrial sources, municipal wastewater, area sources, and agricultural sources.
