The amphiphilic polymers, polymers which contain in their macromolecules both hydrophilic and hydrophobia units, are the base for valuable materials due to their diversified interaction with liquids. So they may act as emulsifiers, compatibilizers, "smart" materials (responding to external stimuli) and many others. In order to control their properties, the hydrophilic - hydrophobic balance in the macromolecules has to be controlled. This balance depends not only upon the constitution of the chain repeating units, but also upon the art of their distribution in the chains (copolymers of controlled unit sequences), the chain topology, the size of the chains and many others. So a careful engineering of the macromolecules is necessary to obtain desired material functions. Polyethers, especially the simplest one, the poly(ethylene oxide), are often used as building blocks of amphiphilic structures. Poly(ethylene oxide) has many valuable properties, but also the disadvantage of being difficult to crosslink and to functionalize, as its chain backbone does not contain any functional groups. Here, we want to report about the synthesis and some properties of amphiphilic polyether macromolecules of controlled chain architecture, based upon a hydrophilic analog of ethylene oxide, the 2,3-epoxypropanol-1, the glycidol.
