INTERLABORATORY COMPARISON TESTING OF METALLURGICAL PRODUCTS FOR THE CONTENTS OF PRECIOUS METALS

A need in the analysis of non-standardized materials is widely encountered in practice of analytical laboratories. Such has been indeed the case in "Norilsky Nickel" plant, which is a major producer of nickel, copper and platinum metals in Russia. One of the tasks of the plant analytical service is to test the starting raw, semi processed and final products on the contents of precious metals for the estimation of an extraction efficiency and drawing up the material balance on these metals over the plant. The both problem are obviously non solvable without a verification the accuracy of the analysis results. The unavailability of certified reference samples appropriate to the direct accuracy verification calls for an involvement of external participants to carry out the verification procedure by the way of interlaboratory comparison testing (ICT). The ICT program was developed with participation, along with the analytical service of "Norilsky Nickel", the other eight analytical laboratories accredited for the works with precious metals. The role of a program coordinator was taken over by the analytical service of "Norilsky Nickel". It was also responsible for a preparation the samples to be analyzed and carrying out the homogeneity test. Three materials referring to semi products in the technological line of precious metals production were chosen as the ICT objects: nickel slime, copper slime, and secondary and slag anodes. The concentrations of precious metals (Pd, Pt, Rh, Ru, Ir, Au and Ag) were defined as the parameters to be determined in the objects. In deciding on an analytical method, no limitations were inserted for the participants. On completion the ICT program, the analysis results had been obtained in 42 runs for nickel slime, 42 runs for copper slime and 14 runs for secondary and slag anodes (826 data in total). For each run, the mean value of the parameter of interest, C_(mean), and its standard deviation, S, were calculated. The calculated values of C_(mean) were agreed as the reference values to the parameter of interest in the runs under consideration. In each run, the results presented by "Norilsky Nickel" are in agreement with the agreed reference values within a range of the calculated S values. The ICT program provides the data for a quality assessment over the results of the participants. It was performed by Z-criterion in line with ISO Guide 43 recommendation. The quality of the ICT results in total can be regarded as satisfactory (Z<2), although Z score calculation for the each ICT object in its own right reveals the laboratories whose results in some parts of ICT program should be considered as doubtful (23) are absent.
