Mechanical-arm navigation system for acetabular cup orientation

Introduction: Dislocation following total hip arthroplasty is a major complication, occurring in up to 10% of the cases and many studies suggest that improper acetabular cup orientation is a major factor affecting impingement and dislocation. Even though right preoperative decision about the positions and orientation of the prepared artificial joint is important for the successful outcome [1,2,3,4], the intra-operative positioning of the cup is more critical because of the difficulty in identifying the pelvic orientation. Several surgical methods and devices have been suggested to secure accurate orientation of acetabular component intra-operatively. Recently, navigation systems using computer and optical measurement devices have been commercialized. But these commercialized navigation systems require a CT-scan before surgery and/ or an expensive optical measurement devices, which cause extra cost and time. In this paper, a mechanical-arm based navigation system which requires less cost and effort is proposed for assisting placement of the acetabular component in THA.
