The paper "On Detecting Periodicity in Astronomical Point Processes," by Peter Bickel, Bas Kleijn, and John Rice (BKR), addresses a very common and important astrophysical data analysis problem, namely detection and characterization of periodic signals in noisy time series data. Nearly all previous work in this area has been for intensity measurements or events collected into bins, for the most part evenly spaced in time. The innovation of this paper is the treatment of point data. That is, the data arise from the detection of individual photons. Accordingly the signal is modeled as a Poisson process with variable rate. Each detected event provides information about the signal amplitude, perhaps modulated by variation in the sensitivity of the instrument, at or near the arrival time of the photon.
