Artificial Shelters for Clawed and Spiny Lobsters: A Critical Review of Enhancement Efforts

Efforts by fishers to increase spiny and clawed lobster numbers for easier, expanded harvest by supplementing sheltering structures probably predate formal fishery studies. Harvest of natural lobster populations has increased to an apparent worldwidemaximum, even as some populations have oscillated or declined from causes ranging from overfishing to disease. Yet most past enhancement attempts, whether based on addition of artificial habitat or on stocking, have failed or produced uncertain effects.Applicable knowledge about recruitment ecology has improved in the last two decades as a result of long-term, experimentally competent analyses of both enhancement attempts and underlying ecological processes. We review and highlight key habitat-enhancement efforts in light of basic research findings that explain probable reasons for success or failure.
