Seismic Isolation Retrofit With Combination of High-Damping Rubber Bearings and Elastic Sliding Bearings

So far, seismic behavior has been improved in various kinds of buildings, such as historical properties, government buildings, and hospitals. The numbers of seismic isolation retrofitted buildings are increasing in Japan for reducing an environmental impact and reconsidering the 'scrap/build' development style. To decrease the seismic risk of a five-story office building, the seismic isolation retrofitting was adopted at the top of the first-floor columns. The isolators consist of high-damping laminated rubber bearings and elastic sliding bearings. The combination of these bearing devices is optimized in design, which improved the modulus of eccentricity and achieved an optimal isolated period for reducing the yield shear force. While the installation work was completed in March 2001, the building had been used without disturbing operations. This paper describes 1) building outline, 2) structural design, 3) the construction sequence and their measured noise and vibration during construction, 4) isolation retrofitting efficiency against traffic vibration.
