There is evidence that HDL-C and inflammation are pivotal in the development of cardiovascular disease. The aim of this study was to determine whether immuno-logical activation, reflected by the plasma levels of soluble CD40 ligand (sCD40L), IL-6 and anti-heat shock protein (anti -HSP) 60 are associated with concentration of plasma HDL-C and apo A1 in patients with FH. Material included 29 patients with clinically diagnosed FH. Plasma lipids were determined enzymatically, apo A1 and apoB using immunoturbidimetric method and sCD40L, IL-6 and anti-HSP 60 by ELISA. The plasma level of sCD40L was negatively correlated with HDL -C ( r= -0.40, p=0.03 and apo Al (r=-0.47, p=0.01) and positively with apo B/apo A1 plasma concentration ( r=0.44, p=0.02), 11-6 (r=0.43, p=0.02) and anti-HSP60 (r=0.41, p<0.03). Multiple regression analysis with sCD40L as dependent variable revealed that only apoA1 level was significantly and independently associated with SCD40L concentrations. The data indicate that increased activation of the sCD40L is related to low levels of HDL-C and apo A1 in patients with FH.
