In order to investigate into the effect of bubble energy (E_b) loading in rock fragmentation under the explosion of a coupling charge within borehole, two groups of contrast fragmentation experiments were conducted in cylindrical concrete models. In the first group, the charge with the constant ratio of shock energy (E_s) to E_b was used to break the models with different acoustic impedance. In the second group, the models with the constant impedance were separately broken by the charges with the different ratio of E_s to E_b. The experimental results showed that, with increase in the peak (P_t) of the transmission compressive stress in the borehole's wall, the mass of small size fragments of the first group rose while that of the second group decreased. The analysis results indicated that the mass of small size fragments depends on the level of both E_s impact and E_b loading dynamically against the surrounding media. Single P_t merely represents the level of E_s impact. Change in the mass of small size fragments relating to E_b loading may imply that, besides the action of quasi-static gases pressure on the wall of borehole, E_b stored in the detonation gases plays an active role in rock fragmentation by loading dynamically.
