Pressurized Hot Water Extraction of Phenolic Compounds and Their Analysis by GC-MS and CZE

Water is an environmentally friendly solvent, which can be used in various extraction processes. Self-constructed pressurized hot water extraction (PHWE) equipment was employed to extract spiked phenolics (phenol, 3-methylphenol, 4chloro-3-methylphenol and 3,4-dichlorophenol) from sea sand and soil at various temperatures. For comparison, analysis of the phenols was carried out by both gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE). Good recoveries for phenols spiked in sea sand were achieved at all PHWE temperatures. The recoveries of the phenols spiked in the soil were generally slightly lower than those of phenols spiked in sea sand. GC-MS studies showed that phenols were selectively extracted from soil at 50°C, but many other compounds (e.g. polyaromatic hydrocarbons) were found at 300°C. Good resolution was achieved in CZE for the separation of phenols at pH 9.7, and the analysis was not interfered by the co-extracted compounds from the soil at 300°C. To conclude, PHWE efficiency was good and a reliable analysis of phenols was carried out generally by both GC-MS and CZE.
