One piece type contact tip is now used as a contact tip for gas shielded arc welding. The life time should be improved for automatic or robotic welding systems. In the present work, two piece type contact tip was developed to improve the life time and arc stability. 24 hours MAG welding operation (arc time =12hours) using the two piece type contact tip for wire of 1.2mm in dia. shows 0.034～0.057mm wear of tip groove.The tip cover and contact tip unit are also developed for most of the arc welding torch in Japan. Comparing with the life time of a conventional contact tip, the life time of developed one is 10 ～20 times longer than that of conventional one. Indeed, the application of the tip to motorcycle industry, the total life time was 384hours at the welding current of 210A for the filler wire of 1,2mm in diameter. So, 13 tips were enough for one welding robot in a year, comparing with 264 conventional tips.
