This paper describes the effect of friction welding conditions on joining phenomena and tensile strength of friction welded joint between oxygen-free copper (OFC) and austenitic stainless steel (SUS304). When the joint was made with a friction pressure of 30MPa, only the OFC side was deformed, which was exhausted as flash. The temperature of the weld interface increased with increasing friction time, and it achieved approximately 900K at a friction time of 3.2s. The joint efficiency increased with increasing friction time, and it reached approximately 49% at a friction time of 3.6s. However, all joints fractured at the weld interface. To improve the joint efficiency, the joint was made with high forge pressure. When the joint was made with a friction time of 2.8s, it had approximately 88% joint efficiency with a forge pressure of 240MPa. Also this joint fractured at the weld interface. On the other hand, when the joint was made with a friction time of 3.2s and a forge pressure of 210MPa, all joints fractured on the OFC side. In addition, this joint had the approximately 93% joint efficiency and the softened region at the weld interface of the OFC side. In conclusion, to obtain higher joint efficiency and the fracture at the OFC side, the joint should be made with a friction time of 3.2s that the temperature at the weld interface reached to approximately 900K, and with a forge pressure of 210MPa or higher.
