Effects of friction time and forge pressure on tensile strength of 5083 aluminum friction stud welded joints

This paper describes the effects of friction time and forge pressure on tensile strength of 5083 aluminum alloy (A5083) friction stud welded joints. In this research, the work side specimen had 32mm diameter and the stud one had 12.8mm diameter, and then those were friction welded. When the joint was made with a friction pressure 30MPa and a forge pressure 30MPa, the upsetting (deformation) occurred at only the stud side. The joint at a friction time of 1.4s (close to the initial peak torque) had approximately 29% joint efficiency. However, the joint efficiency was maintained approximately 35% in spite of increasing friction time, because the joint had the not-joined region at the weld interface. The joint efficiency increased with increasing forge pressure. Then, when the joint was made at a friction time of 1.4s and a forge pressure of 210MPa, it had approximately 75% joint efficiency. However, the joint efficiency slightly decreased with increasing forge pressure, and it was approximately 62% at a forge pressure of 360MPa. On the other hand, the joint, which was made at a friction time of 5.0s and a forge pressure of 210MPa, had approximately 63% joint efficiency. Almost all joints fractured at the initial weld interface, although a few joints fractured between at the weld interface and the base metal. To obtain high joint efficiency, the joint should be made with suitable friction time near 1.4s and forge pressure such as 210MPa.
