Effect of salt on growth, mineral nutrition and profiles of polypeptides of two wheat species.

Two wheat species, Triticum durum (cv. Ben Bachir) and Triticum aestivum (cv. Tanit), were cultivated hydroponically and subjected to salt stress (50 or 100 mM NaCl) up to 18 days. Growth, mineral nutrition and polypeptidic composition were investigated. Soluble proteins extracted from leaves were analysed by two dimensional electrophoresis in order to detect NaCl induced changes in the polypeptide patterns. Athough salt treatment resulted in growth reduction for both species, T. durum was much moretolerant than T. aestivum. The average concentrations of Na~+ or Cl~- ions in the whole plant tissues were similar in the two species. However, ion translocation to shoots was more important in T. durum than in T. aestivum. This could explain the maintenance of leaf water status in 7. durum. Five hundred spots were detected. The greatest alterations in the polypeptide profiles following salt stress were found in the sensitive species. Among 56 spots (molecular mass, 15-31 kDa) specifically considered inthe acidic region of the gel, 5 spots disappeared in both salt treated species, 7 others disappeared only in salt treated T. aestivum plants. Twenty seven spots declined in salt treated T. aestivum plants while only 20 declined in salt treated T. durumplants. No increased in T. aestivum, 12 spots increased, five remained unchanged, and two polypeptides were induced.
