Two novices in the world of Beowulf clusters learned-by-doing everything from selecting components to troubleshooting the cluster. We were asked to investigate the feasibility of implementing a Beowulf Computing Cluster for speeding throughput of legacy optical code with minimal rewriting. Succeeding required no degrees in computer science and no "solid networking experience." Success required past experience building one-off PCs, access to overclocker websites, and perseverance. We now understand the phrase "bleeding edge technology." Experiences and lessons learned along the way are documented in this paper.
